Building a Robust Foundation With a Tokenized Design System

As the founding designer at Olea, a venture within Standard Chartered Bank, my early challenge was to establish a design system from the ground up.

Upon joining the team, I quickly identified three key challenges within my first three months:

1. Back and forth communication: misinterpretation between designers and engineers on the design due to lack of proper documentation.
2. Inefficiencies: component updates were hard-coded in each instance locally instead of globally.
3. Design Inconsistency: lack of consistency in the visual and interaction elements undermines a cohesive brand experience.

With the goal of resolving these issues, I led the development of a design system in collaboration with the engineering team and other stakeholders. This design system acts as our single source of truth, containing all the design principles, guidelines, components, and interaction patterns.

The design system was designed to be scalable across all client-facing portals.
